Winning Matters? How Awards Shape Visibility, Credibility, and Reality in Architectural Practice at ARCH:ID 2026

ARCH:ID 2026 opened with remarkable energy at ICE BSD City from 23–26 April 2026, reaffirming its status as Indonesia’s largest architectural exhibition and conference. With an expanded 18,000-square-meter exhibition area and an estimated 31,000 visitors over four days, ARCH:ID has evolved into more than an expo—it is a grand celebration for architects, interior designers, developers, vendors, and creative industry players. The event serves as a vital platform for networking, showcasing innovation, sharing emerging technologies, and strengthening Indonesia’s design ecosystem.

Among its many highlights, one particularly compelling session for architecture and interior professionals was the talk series, “Does Winning Matters?” Awards in Architectural Practice, held on 25 April 2026 at Tetenger Tutur, Hall 7. Moderated by Ar. Welly Kusumo, IAI—representing the Indonesian Institute of Architects’ Architectural Awards Board and Principal of Cowema Studio—the discussion brought together respected voices including Ar. Rafael David Pasaribu of Aboday Design, Fandy Gunawan of Fandy Gunawan Studio, and Ar. Rafael Arsono of Rafaelmiranti Architect.

The session explored a question that resonates deeply across professional practice: does winning awards truly shape an architect’s career, or is it simply an amplified form of visibility? From the structure of the discussion and presentation materials, one message became clear—awards can significantly elevate recognition, credibility, and market perception, but they are not absolute indicators of long-term architectural success.

ARCH:ID 2026 Talk Series

Winning often functions as a strategic accelerator. Awards can enhance a studio’s profile, attract higher-value clients, and open doors to national or international opportunities. For emerging firms, this visibility can be transformative. However, the talk also acknowledged critical industry realities: not all awards are equal. Transparency, jury credibility, and the purpose behind each award matter greatly. In today’s competitive landscape, some awards may prioritize exposure over true design merit, making discernment essential.

Recognition vs Reality

Ultimately, the discussion suggested that awards are best understood as amplifiers—not guarantees. They can strengthen a practice’s position, but genuine legacy is built through design quality, client trust, execution, and meaningful impact. In architecture, recognition may open doors, but sustained excellence keeps them open.

Speakers & Moderator

ARCH:ID 2026’s “Winning Matters?” session offered a timely reminder that while trophies may shape perception, real architectural value is defined by the spaces that endure beyond accolades.
