On September 17, 2024, Cowema Studio proudly received the prestigious Indonesia Steel Architecture Award 2024 for its exceptional work on MG House in the Residential Category. Organized by BlueScope Indonesia in collaboration with the Indonesian Architects Association (IAI), this award is a testament to Cowema Studio’s dedication to innovation and architectural excellence.
The recognition was part of IAI’s 65th-anniversary celebrations, held at Thamrin Nine Ballroom, Jakarta.
The Steel Architecture Award is one of the most sought-after recognitions in the architecture industry. It highlights projects that successfully integrate BlueScope’s pre-painted steel products in building design, showcasing their efficiency, aesthetics, sustainability, and positive community impact. Cowema Studio’s win in the Residential category for MG House emphasizes the studio’s capability in designing modern tropical homes using premium steel materials.
MG House, is a modern tropical residence that challenges conventional design norms. Located on a corner lot in Joglo, Jakarta Barat, the design process for this project began in 2018, with construction starting in 2019 amidst the pandemic. The house was envisioned for a retired couple, Bapak G and Ibu M, and accommodates their three children who are studying abroad. One of the primary design challenges was creating a seamless indoor-outdoor connection in an urban setting, fulfilling the clients’ desire for privacy and functionality.
The house’s “barn” shape is combined with modern geometric lines, making it a landmark in the neighborhood. The roof and facade feature Cocoa Brown BlueScope Colorbond steel, which harmonizes with ulin wood accents, creating a warm, tropical aesthetic. The home’s strategic design incorporates natural ventilation, an inner courtyard for cross-ventilation, and sustainable materials, such as reclaimed wood and Polyurethane (PU) foam insulation, to reduce energy consumption while enhancing comfort.
The final judging session for the award took place on August 18, 2024, with a panel of esteemed judges, including Irfan Fauzie, VP Sales & Marketing at BlueScope Indonesia. In a live-streamed event, Irfan remarked on the challenges of incorporating steel into residential designs, highlighting how Cowema Studio’s attention to detail and smart insulation solutions proved the viability of steel roofing for residential applications.
In his commentary, Irfan noted: “Cowema Studio’s innovative use of spray-applied insulation under the steel roof demonstrated that steel can provide thermal and acoustic comfort in residential homes, without compromising on design.” This breakthrough project reinforced the role of BlueScope steel in the residential market, showcasing its versatility.
Winning this award not only cements Cowema Studio’s position as a leader in residential steel architecture but also opens new doors for international recognition. Ar. Ida Bagus Gede Wahyudi, IAI, the commissioner of Cowema Studio, presented the MG House project during the judging session and proudly received the Indonesia Steel Architecture Award Trophy and Certificate at the awarding night. As part of the prize, Cowema Studio also secured a ticket to the ASEAN Steel Architecture Award event, which includes airfare and accommodation. This international platform will allow Cowema Studio to further demonstrate the potential of steel architecture in the ASEAN region, proving that design has no boundaries when it comes to innovation.
