Resilience by Design: Integrating Aesthetics, Innovation, and Sustainability with Coated Steel

Resilience by Design

How can architecture remain resilient, adaptive, and aesthetically compelling amid evolving environmental challenges and rapid urban development? Can coated steel become one of the key materials supporting more resilient architecture?

These questions became the starting point of the collaborative talk between ARCHINESIA and BlueScope, titled “Resilience by Design: Integrating Aesthetics, Innovation, and Sustainability with Coated Steel.” The event explored how innovative materials, thoughtful design approaches, and cross-industry collaboration can contribute to shaping architecture that is both sustainable and future-ready.

Opening Speech Resilience by Design

The program was structured into three main sessions: an introductory presentation, a panel discussion with architecture professionals, and the launch of a publication highlighting notable steel-based architectural works.

Opening Session: Aanwijzing – Indonesia Steel Architecture Award

The event opened with an aanwijzing session related to the Indonesia Steel Architecture Award (ISAA) program. This session introduced the framework, objectives, and evaluation principles behind the award.

Participants were given a clearer understanding of the standards and expectations for architectural works that utilize steel as a key design and structural material. The presentation emphasized the importance of innovation, sustainability, and structural resilience—values that are increasingly vital in contemporary architecture.

Panel Discussion: Exploring Steel Architecture

The second session featured a panel discussion that explored the role of steel—particularly coated steel—in supporting architectural creativity and performance.

Speakers
  • Ar. Doti Windajani, IAI, AA
  • Ar. Rafael Pasaribu, IAI

Moderator
  • Imelda Akmal

During the discussion, the speakers shared perspectives on design challenges, material performance, and how coated steel can enable architects to create buildings that are not only structurally strong but also flexible in design and environmentally responsible.

The conversation also highlighted the importance of collaboration between architects, material manufacturers, and industry stakeholders in developing architectural solutions capable of responding to climate, environmental, and urban challenges.

Book Launch: Indonesia Steel Architectural Award 2024

The event concluded with the launch of the book Indonesia Steel Architectural Award 2024, a publication documenting outstanding architectural projects that demonstrate innovation and excellence in the use of steel.

As part of the launch, participants received printed copies of the book, symbolizing appreciation and knowledge sharing within the architectural community. The moment of the book handover was captured in a group photo session.
Representatives from Cowema Studio, Welly KusumoAres Budhianto and Kris Dandi, were also present at the event. Ares Budhianto joined other participants in the commemorative photo while receiving the book.

One of the featured projects in the publication is MG House, a residential work by Cowema Studio in Jakarta that utilizes COLORBOND® steel in Cocoa Brown with Thermatech® technology, supporting thermal comfort and energy efficiency in a tropical climate. Designed in a modern tropical barn style for a retired couple, the house combines steel elements with ulin wood to create an iconic and functional home that maintains a strong connection with its tropical surroundings.

Strengthening Collaboration Through Design

Through presentations, discussions, and the launch of a new publication, Resilience by Design highlighted the importance of integrating aesthetics, material innovation, and sustainability in contemporary architectural practice.

The event demonstrated that resilience in architecture is not only about structural strength, but also about the ability of design to adapt, collaborate, and respond creatively to future challenges.
