Cowema Studio Road to IAWKL 2024

Oktober, 11 2024

Indonesian Architects Week Kuala Lumpur (IAWKL) 2024 is a prestigious event that showcases the finest works of Indonesian architects on an international platform. Organized as a collateral event of the World Congress of Architects under the International Union of Architects (UIA), IAWKL has previously been held in cities like Tokyo (2011), Seoul (2017), and virtually in Rio de Janeiro (2021).

The 2024 event takes place in Kuala Lumpur, coinciding with the UIA International Forum in November, and is curated by Rizki Supratman and Trianzani Sulshi. Themed Equatorial Synaesthesia, it explores the harmony between sensory perception and spatial design, showcasing 72 architects’ responses to this intricate theme.

The Cowema Studio team, comprising Wiku Habib, Sarah Amanda, and Krisdandi Bimo, has been meticulously preparing for their submission to IAWKL 2024. Their selected project, The Pasisi 8, responds to the theme Equatorial Synaesthesia by focusing on sensory stimulation through architectural design. The team has engaged in several phases, starting with submission discussions in July 2024, followed by design refinement, prototype creation, and detailed scale drawings. They are developing a physical model and visual representation that engage with the exhibition’s sensory exploration through sight, touch, and sound, pushing the limits of architecture to invoke emotion and awareness.

IAWKL 2024 will be held from November 14 to 24, 2024, at The Godown in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This venue provides an industrial yet artistic backdrop, ideal for the international exhibition of cutting-edge architectural projects.

Representing Indonesia in this global event, Cowema Studio’s The Pasisi 8 villa project from Canggu, Bali, embodies the essence of the theme Equatorial Synaesthesia. This project is a modern interpretation of critical regionalism, blending local wisdom, tropical climate considerations, and modern architectural principles.

Site Progress

Situated in the equatorial region, The Pasisi 8 addresses the tropical challenges of high humidity, intense rainfall, and heat. The design incorporates natural ventilation and water-resistant materials, such as steel, wood, and natural stone, to ensure durability and comfort. Inspired by the Tri Angga philosophy, which emphasizes harmony between the head, body, and foot of a building, the villa is also aligned with the sea, respecting local regulations and cultural norms.

The sensory engagement in The Pasisi 8 is evident through the careful use of light, texture, and natural elements. Natural lighting plays a crucial role in creating dynamic shadows, while textured materials like rattan, stone, and wood stimulate touch. The villa also integrates aromatic experiences with surrounding gardens, enhancing the connection between residents and nature. Overall, The Pasisi 8 merges modern tropical architecture with cultural sensitivity, making it a fitting representation of Indonesia in IAWKL 2024.

This participation marks another milestone for Cowema Studio, continuing its journey of innovation and excellence on the global stage.
