How WARI’ 2026 Proves Indonesian Creativity Is WorldClass

How WARI’ 2026 Proves Indonesian Creativity Is WorldClass

WARI’ 2026: Where Art, Colour, and Interior Design Tell a Story

An immersive exploration of contemporary Indonesian art and the spaces that bring it to life. On 20 October 2026, WARI’ Art/Interior 2026 opened at Jakarta Design Center (JDC), Jakarta, bringing together contemporary art, interior design, and sculptural works in an experience that invites visitors to see spaces from a different perspective.

The term Wari’ originates from the Bugis language of South Sulawesi, where it serves as a core pillar of the traditional Pangaddereng custom. In this cultural context, it refers to a system of classification, arrangement, and appropriate placement of objects and individuals within a community or space.

A collaboration between BK Studio Design, Galeri Zen1, and Javier Curated, WARI’ explores the relationship between art and interiors, asking how objects can transform not only a room’s appearance, but also its atmosphere, identity, and meaning.

A Journey Through Colour and Space

Rather than presenting artworks as isolated objects, WARI’ approaches the exhibition as a journey. Each room becomes a distinct visual experience, shaped by colour, composition, material, and the relationship between artworks and their surroundings. The theatrical presentation creates an engaging sequence of spaces, encouraging visitors to move, observe, and discover. Every room offers a different impression, with its own visual language and narrative.

Beyond Decoration: Art with Meaning

At the heart of WARI’ is the idea that placing art is an act of design in itself. An artwork does more than occupy a wall or fill an empty corner; its position, scale, and relationship with surrounding elements can change how a space is experienced. Through thoughtful curation, the exhibition demonstrates how contrast, arrangement, and negative space can create balance, tension, and connection. The result is an exploration of interiors as living environments shaped by personal expression and artistic interpretation.

Celebrating Diverse Creative Perspectives

WARI’ brings together works by Boy Kurniawan, also known as Boyhemian, Witjk, Indra Evendi in collaboration with Genius Loci Asia, Yudi Sulistyo, and Apin. Their distinct approaches contribute to a diverse encounter between contemporary art, playful forms, sculptural expression, and interior settings. Together, the works demonstrate the breadth of Indonesian creative practice and its potential to engage audiences beyond conventional gallery presentations.

A New Way to Experience Interiors

WARI’ ultimately invites visitors to reconsider the spaces they inhabit and the objects they choose to live with. By combining immersive room settings, colourful visual narratives, and diverse artistic voices, the exhibition shows how art and interior design can work together to create experiences that feel personal, expressive, and memorable.

Running from 20–24 October 2026 at the Javier Showroom on the third floor of Jakarta Design Center, WARI’ celebrates the possibilities that emerge when art moves beyond the gallery wall and becomes part of the spaces around us.

Each artist brings a distinctive creative identity to WARI’, showcasing works rich in intricate details, unique forms, and carefully considered visual elements. Together, their creations reflect the diversity, originality, and exceptional craftsmanship of Indonesian art and design
