The ceremony began with a Curatorial Talk, sharing session, and interactive Q&A. In his opening remarks, Rizki Supratman extended his gratitude to all stakeholders and participants, who had dedicated six months of preparation to make this event possible. Rizki expressed his hopes that IAWKL 2024 would serve as a platform for collaboration, particularly between Indonesia and Malaysia, fostering discussions and knowledge sharing beneficial for both countries and future generations.

Trianzani Sulshi added that the exhibition is not merely a collection of architectural models but a testament to the collective efforts, passion, and dedication of 70 architects in total, including 20 architects under the age of 40 and 14 women principal architects from Indonesia. She emphasized that the event goes beyond the physical display, shedding light on the dialogues that occur during project execution—whether between architects and clients, craftsmen, or within firms—each revealing unique challenges and stories.

IAWKL 2024 celebrates Indonesian architecture, showcasing 70 architecture firms from 11 provinces, including works in the form of meticulously crafted architectural models. The exhibition reflects the theme, “Equatorial Synaesthesia: An Exploration of Sensory Harmony and Spatial Perception, Revisiting the Tenets of Critical Regionalism.”

Key figures involved in the event include Rofianisa Nurdin as Program Director and Andi Rahmat from NUSAE as Art Director. The advisory board features prominent architects such as Andra Matin, Wendy Djuhara, Imelda Akmal, Nelly L. Daniel, and Deddy Wahjudi.
Among the exhibitors was Cowema Studio Arsitektur, which showcased its work alongside other firms, representing Indonesia’s diverse architectural landscape. The Pasisi, blends practical solutions for tropical challenges with sensory-rich design. A steep 55-degree roof, water-resistant materials, and drainage systems address high rainfall, while cross-ventilation, shutters, and canopies manage heat and humidity. Rooted in local culture, the Tri Angga concept and adherence to height regulations ensure harmony with its surroundings. By integrating natural light, wind, and vibrant flora, The Pasisi creates an immersive sensory experience, fostering an emotional connection between inhabitants and their environment.

Rizki Supratman described the event as a multi-generational platform, fostering discussions about architecture, interior design, and related fields. He highlighted the importance of transferring knowledge across generations, likening it to passing a “Tongkat Estafet”, ensuring the continuity and development of architectural practices.

Topics Discussed in the Curatorial Talk
The Curatorial Talk explored innovative and thought-provoking architectural themes:

  1. Adaptive Architecture This approach reinterprets historical structures to enhance spatial dynamics, addressing urban density challenges while integrating heritage and modern functionality.
  2. Cultural & Ecological Resonance Celebrating the interconnectedness of culture and ecology, this practice fuses local craftsmanship and sustainability, creating architecture deeply rooted in its environment.
  3. Multisensory Experiences Prioritizing sensory engagement, this philosophy creates immersive environments that blend materiality and functionality to evoke emotional and meaningful connections.
  4. Climate-Sensitive Design Utilizing sustainable materials and advanced technologies, this approach adapts architecture to climatic conditions, fostering harmony between buildings and their environment.
IAWKL 2024 is part of the UIA World Congress Collateral Events, offering an international stage to celebrate Indonesia’s architectural identity. The exhibition is open to the public daily from November 14 to 23, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, with free entry.
